Using reViSIT with Ableton Lite and LaunchPad Pro - Light Show

BACKGROUND

I picked up a Novation LaunchPad Pro.

Included with the bundle was a copy of Ableton Lite.
It's not bad for an intro DAW, even if I've been using FLSTUDIO for over 10 years now.

My LaunchPad Pro obviously has more features that work better with my copy of Ableton.
An Upgrade to Ableton Suite would cost me around $650, which I don't have atm.

USING reViSIT with Ableton

I'm starting to get into "LaunchPad covers" but have some issues I want to hash out.

I'm attempting my best to extend Ableton Lite as much as possible.

Most Light Shows fed back to the LaunchPad use some kind of MIDI Extension,
which is part of Max4Live which is only available with Ableton Suite.

I installed reViSIT 64bit and it works ok enough in Ableton Lite.

Below is a description of what I'm trying to do...

ISSUE

I'm trying to get MIDI data such as Note on, Velocity, Duration, etc. from tracks in reViSIT,
as MIDI Out to trigger note values and display as LED patterns on my LaunchPad

If I recall correctly, I've seen and read somewhere that reViSIT also allows
for individual Pattern trigger via a single keypress
or maybe even Pattern start triggered to a MIDI Note value
(like C1 or D2 or whatever midi key) to start a Pattern.

Any ideas? Thanks.

Hi Sparky,

I have since tested it 32/64-bit versions of REAPER, Renoise, Cubase 5 and 9.5, without having any problems.

I managed to reproduce the issue temporarily with REAPER 32-bit, but it mysteriously started working after a short delay. There's an outside chance an error message delayed dismissal of the splash screen, so I've added another small change:

reViSiT 1.8.6 Std/Pro (32 and 64-bit) http://revisit.info/download.asp
Fingers crossed...!
Best,
Chris

Hi Sparky,

I have released a new beta of reViSiT 1.8 Pro, which I believe should address the current splash screen issue, as well as add a couple of other fixes and performance improvements:

http://revisit.info/beta.asp

reViSiT can output live MIDI, both to the host directly (via AU/VST) and to external MIDI drivers. You can record this output to a track, or hook it up to another synth. As you describe, the ideal for reViSiT would also be to integrate with the host's own MIDI tracks - effectively establishing it as an alternative part editor - but plugins are always at the mercy of the host and what's permitted by the plugin specification. Steinberg's VST3 spec made some progress along these lines, but is only really support in Steinberg hosts (Cubase and Nuendo), and I'm not sure to what degree even then. You could have a play with their VST3 SDK and see if you can peak inside a normal MIDI track - let me know what you find!

Best,
Chris

Thanks Chris.

I have an Android/Windows tracker app of my own in development and I'm considering the possibility of turning that into a VST plugin which will allow me to edit MIDI notes in tracker style but have the resulting notes appear in Cubase's midi events. This isn't the way ReViSiT works is it? ReViSiT is essentially an audio plugin isn't it?

Do you know if it is possible to create a VST plugin which will allow the editing of Midi events in the DAW/Host? Obviously I'd like to target Cubase only for my own purely selfish needs. :)

Hi Sparky,

There does seem to be some issues with the splash screen in the current beta - apparently in Reaper and newer Cubase versions. For whatever reason, my Reaper install doesn't exhibit this and I'm otherwise still on Cubase 5. However, I have just ordered Cubase 9.5 Pro, in order to support x64 development of reViSiT/Manhattan, so hope to replicate (and fix) the problem soon. I've got some things I can try in the meantime, and plan to get a new beta out in the coming weeks.

I've also recently got a working alpha version of 1.9, featuring multiple pitch columns per channel ('polyphonic' channels). The mid-term goal for this feature is ultimately to also support chord spellings (e.g. "C-5 Maj7 Pn ·· .00"). No timeline on a public 1.9 beta, but hopefully this summer.

Best,
Chris

Hi everyone,
After much frustrated searching for a solution for being able to slave a tracker to my DAWs clock I discovered revisit. I tinkered with the standard version for a time and everything worked perfectly. I could sequence my beats directly within the DAW, everything saved well and it is a great solution to allow me to record into my DAW and edit my beats on the fly. I loved it so much I bought the pro version as I really wanted to get at those subrows however I have enountered something that's had me pulling my hair out.
Everything works fine up until the point I save the project. Before the save I can play back the sequenced beats with no problems from either the DAWs play button or revisits play button. After I save the project during playback for some reason it plays back the sequenced beats with some sort of looping/pingpong type effect. Ive checked to see if the looping functions are turned off and they are. In frustration I shut down the vst channel running revisit and started from scratch. I opened up a new vst instrument channel and got to sequencing up some beats again. Everything was going well, playback was fine but then after I saved the project the same thing happened- the samples are all playing back with looping despite the loop function not being turned on.
Has anyone experienced this kind of thing before?
I'm running Nuendo 4.3.0 (build 371 from 2009)
Revisit Pro 1.7.9.18
And my system is running Windows 7 Ultimate, i5-3330 CPU @ 3.00 GHz, RAM 16 GB, 64 bit OS.

Would it perhaps be I'm running an old version of Nuendo? Is revisit pro is stable with the latest Nuendos?

I would really appreciate any help or suggestions, I just want to make music and this is quite frustrating as I'm sure everyone understands.

Cheers,
The Gizzards
