Patches in SF2 files can be auditioned without leaving the library window - just select and play with the keyboard. Loading into the song during playback is also possible, but does lead to the window closing. However, to get back you only need to hit Enter again, such that a double tap of the Enter key should load a patch and return you to the library.

At the same time, I understand that it can be useful to quickly and iteratively browse through instruments and listen to them in context. This is, for example, possible with MIDI voices and incrementing the MIDI Program Number. Perhaps Shift+Enter to load without closing the window?

Another scenario is loading multiple samples/instruments at once, rather than to-ing and fro-ing between the browser screen and the name list. I'm looking to develop a mechanism for multiple selection to support this.

Would be cool to see a feature that allows the user to just use ReViSiT as a MIDI sampler with all this attention on the sampling capabilities, could become a more affordable alternative to Kontakt! That being said however with only one instance of ReViSiT permitted it would suck having to choose between a "sampler" and "tracker" mode. At one point I did have MilkyTracker set up on a separate computer to use as an old-skool style sampler through MIDI-input, but now I'm just rambling...

And, if you like reViSiT, spread the word - like it on Facebook.
Done!

Hi everyone,
Lots of developments in the reViSiT project lately – a new version, a new license, and a forthcoming beta.
reViSiT 2 and a new extended license
Users who register reViSiT v1.5+ Professional Edition (or who have already done so) now qualify for free updates up to v2.4. So there’s no longer any reason to wait for reViSiT 2, later this year, and you can start taking advantage of the professional features straight away – currently available with £5 off. Registering will also get you onto the beta programme, for testing new versions such as the up and coming v1.8 and v2.0. reViSiT 2 will introduce many major new features, ways of working, and original technologies, while offering a completely redesigned, streamlined, and customisable user interface – all the time remaining faithful to the rapid tracker workflow and tricks you’re used to. More details will be revealed in early April.
reViSiT v1.7.4 update released
I’m delighted to announce the public release of reViSiT 1.7.4. This is a minor update with several fixes and workflow improvements, but also includes an updated synth/audio engine, improving both audio quality and performance (and extending the architecture, ahead of v1.8). See the full changelog below for details. reViSiT 1.7.4 is now available for download from: http://revisit.info/download.asp.
reViSiT v1.8 beta version next week
reViSiT v1.8 will introduce a major upgrade to the built-in synthesizer, with velocity-mapped and layered samples, and support for SoundFont 2 and sfz instruments. Through the reViSiT website, users will have access to a growing library of free, high-quality presets and sound banks, including complete General MIDI sets, orchestral samples, and synthesizer patches. This library will aim to provide a “ROM” of sounds for new users, who don’t have their own collection, but also for seasoned reViSiT composers, who don’t want to mess around with instrument or plugin settings – but just dial up an instrument and start writing music! The first reViSiT 1.8 beta version, which also includes a number of other developments such as improved MOD/IT/XM playback (with old tracker timing) and tools for managing samples and channels, should be available to registered users in the coming days.
As always, let me know your thoughts and how you’re getting on by emailing or posting on the forum: http://forum.revisit.info. Thanks to those who post links to their music – always great to see the different ways reViSiT is used! And, if you like reViSiT, spread the word - like it on Facebook.
All the best,
Chris

v1.7.4
Program Settings dialog (in F12).
* Substantial audio performance improvements.
* Improved handling of subrows containing Axx, etc.
* Top row labels visible without centralised cursor.
Improved instrument envelope UI, with grid, labels (as needed) and zoom (use mouse scroll wheel).
Audio quality improvements.
Overwrite prompt for "Save As...".
Panning Swing now in absolute units, not percent.
Library indices now 1-based (to match UI).
Row numbers maintain aspect ratio if font resized.
Output Bus 1 options removed from Standard Edition.
Info bar now supports tempo effect (@xx).
Sample/Instrument List/Library support Home/End.
* Panning overwritten if Default Theta is set.
* Minor graphics glitches in subrow editing.
Playback cursor shown for row/note auditions.
Filter Range setting not loaded properly.
Antialiasing bleed for large glyphs/fonts.
Channel colour not redrawn correctly upon scroll.
Browse button not working in Instrument Library.
Some envelope settings causing hanging notes.
Unlooped envelope not holding final value.
Envelopes not smooth at low volumes.
Pitch accuracy reduced late in longer samples.
Improved parameter noise (No click) filter.
Non-standard sample rates not correct pitch.

Several improvements for the Sample List/Editor are planned for future releases, and improved feedback on currently planning instruments and samples is something I'll be looking at. Unfortunately, I can not guarantee an ETA, as there are a number of jobs ahead in the queue.

Traditionally, reViSiT development focuses on controlling music (i.e. the Pattern Editor), rather than sound (i.e. Sample and Instrument Lists), which is partly because many users use MIDI instruments and VST plugins, rather than the built-in sample synthesizer, but also because I, as a composer, never wanted to do much sound editing, and would rather just focus on the music. The next version of reViSiT, for example, will extend the built-in sample synthesizer (velocity mapping) and add SoundFont and sfz support, so that people can load pre-prepared instruments. In the mid-term, I'm looking to have a sort of library of prepared sounds that new users (without any sounds or sound editing experience) can get started more quickly. Of course, I appreciate that other people will want to tweak sounds, so I'm always looking to improvement the Instrument/Sample List UIs.

Best,
Chris
