Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | Also to prevent tune threads being scattered around, I guess we could all dump our links here, as to show off what we've done with revisit! (stickymake?) I'll kick off here then with a remake of the MSX game Solid Snake (Konami).. http://www.msx.org/modules.php?op=modload&name=Downloads&file=index&req=visit&lid=882

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | Marvelous! Another masterpiece. I really like the idea of a song thread. It deserves a sticky, I think. Do you want to re-post the ones you've posted before - to get the ball rolling? Anyone else? Chris

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | Of course, it *is* a bit tricky all this.. what do I exactly demonstrate? Revisit? Sample libs? Me myself? One can only hope that new visitors take tracking serious as a means to create notes, but they should still understand that these notes are also where it ends. One can write great books in the worst text editor and crappy books in highly advanced text editors. That said, did you see Sound on Sound from September? There's a small corner about trackers in an article about free software, but no revisit mentioning.. you gotta do some more marketing, mister!

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | My 3 entries for a small compo on a synthforum (1 synth model, 2 polyphone tracks max with prog.changes allowed, 1 drum machine, 1 effect): http://pub.unreal64.net/boor/CS_TBL-VintageFM80s.mp3 (2x FM8, 1x Linn) http://pub.unreal64.net/boor/CS_TBL%20-%20Neural%20Net.mp3 (2x FM8, 1x 808) http://pub.unreal64.net/boor/CS_TBL%20-%20Spanish%20Lullaby.mp3 (2x FM8 (really!)) In the first 2 songs I've created sounds which had several carriers which were note limited by using key-scaling, this way I have multiple 'sub instruments' in one FM8 instrument. All the sounds you hear are thus FM (own voices), including the Timpani, Trumpet, Guitar, Metallic bangs, etc. etc. No samples apart from those in the drums drums have been used.

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | Another game remake! Over a hundred 48-row patterns :P I actually altered the module.xml to mass-copy over 30 patterns by hand. Starship Rendezvous - Close Encounter Quite some expression (cc11) controlling here, could that be automated in a pitchbend-like fashion? E01 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 is so much more comfy than: 27F 27E 27D 27C 27B etc. whether or not there is fx column interpolation present or not. The largest advantage is that the expression changes become relative rather than absolute. Having: 201 211 221 231 241 251 241 231 221 211 201 ..for an expressive p-f-p flow implies that you need to redo/level-up this stuff when you want a f-fff-f flow. With relative controls you can just do: 201 F0F F00 F00 F00 F00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 and: 241 F0F F00 F00 F00 F00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 E00 ..when you want a louder variant. In addition I must add that I rarely use pitch anyway, it would be nice when I could decide what the E and F controllers could (relatively!) control, like expression.

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | btw, you gotta listen to that one on headphones for some nice out-of-the-headphones panning.. ;P As for the controller stuff, how about this: For each instrument definition you can define an x amount of (multi-)controller 'patterns', of 'flows'. For instance: ---------- 014 | 001 ---------- 201 301 210 --- 220 --- 230 --- 240 --- 250 --- 260 --- 250 --- 240 --- 230 --- 220 --- 210 --- 201 --- ---------- Where elsewhere I define that 2 equals expression and 3 equals modulation wheel. 014 is the index of the table I've just defined and 001 is the playbackspeed of the table in ticks. With a single command (some character, dunno which one, like I14) I could apply this table to the instrument playing. This is basically like having multichannel fx columns, tho this may be a more elegant solution, it surely saves typing work. Multi-fx columns (in the pattern editor!) may sound nice, but keep in mind what it takes to fill all these columns. With these tables you can of course define oodles and oodles of articulations/controllers (assuming long table lengths and basically any amount of controller colums). Normal playing-flows, but also crescendos, decresendos, filtersweeps, anything else. With 256 tables per instrument definition this would be more than enough, and I'd have no problem to dedicated this chunk o' mem to them. Edited by CS_TBL 2009-02-10 9:55 PM

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | PS. You could also support +value and -value in these tables, for relative changes.

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | Awesome! Sounds great, looks great. I guess this means I have to rename the thread now... Hmm. Is it still called viral marketing when you're giving something away for free? Great work, CS_TBL! Chris PS: Have you come across CamStudio? It's lossless compression codec / screen recorder that might be useful if you start running out of disk space.

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | Have you been peaking at my CD collection, or what? 'Actually had the pleasure of seeing Jarre live last year, for his tour of Oxygene. Awesome stuff - only time the Royal Albert Hall has ever sounded good, in my opinion. Chris

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | Aren't "Jarre" and "live" opposites? :P
chrisnash |

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | Jarre is possibly one of the few exceptions to the rule that electroacoustic live performance is a waist of time. He, for one, doesn't sit in the middle of a stage with a mere Apple Powerbook. Naturally, his son et lumière shows are a spectacular experience, with lasers, video, pyrotechnics and fireworks. However, the one I went to was simply him with his colleagues on a stage with an improbable number of classic synthesisers. He uses the synths in quite an animated fashion, and their are plenty of visual extras, such as video enlargements of what he's up to, together with musically-timed lighting. Needless to say, it was a great concert! Chris

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | Yeah, it's AERO - an amazing CD/DVD. One of the few uses of surround sound creatively. Each of the tracks have been completely, ur... "revisited", sometimes interspersed with random soundscapes and surround effects. There's also a great example of live surround on the last track - though not sure whether the helicopter is real or not. The CD is also supposed to have some surround sound processing (virtual surround, phase tricks, etc.). The only disappointment is that the DVD is not in DTS format (only DD 5.1)! Everyone have a listen to it, if they can, and be inspired to use reViSiT Pro's surround capabilities! Chris

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | You may not believe it, but I'm still on 2.0 here, no surround whatsoever, tho my speakers are full-range, so I don't need a sub. People often ask me why I don't have a 5.1 or 7.1 setup. I typically see no use for myself, because: - practically speaking, I can't properly place those speakers here - most music I listen to is released as stereo anyway Something else, about your research project. You've seen 3 videos containing reViSiT recordings. Can you make up anything relevant from it (mere patterndata)? If not, I wonder what you are looking to find out anyway. What do you study with that research project? How people move the cursor within a pattern? How often and when people apply a pattern effect (double, halve, blocks, row-skip etc.), in which columns people put data? As 'typing music' is quite comparable with typing text (especially technical documents), being that you need fast, uncluttered and functionality-rich edtors for both, could your research project also be applied to editing text in Word, editing fields in a spreadsheet, and inputting data in a database?

Developer Posts: 746 Location: England | It doesn't surprise that people haven't moved to surround. It's a chicken-and-the-egg problem - no one will write for it, because no one listens to it; no one listens to it, because no one has written for it. Hopefully, we'll overcome this problem, because I think the format is an amazing medium for music. Chris

Expert Posts: 512 Location: Netherlands | Apart from the chicken-and-egg, most consumers who have their sound set in their living room, just don't want all those speakers everywhere in-sight. People hide them behind the curtains, behind the couch, on top of the book shelf behind some plant etc. And even when they're tucked away in or behind their things, they'd probably still be placed incorrectly compared to the suggested setup. Just from this fact alone I'm not exactly sure what the future of surround will be. The practical inconveniences may simply outweigh the benefits.
